Life has a way of calling us toward what we need most. For us, a mother-daughter team rooted in West Philadelphia, that call came during a time of deep local and global trauma in 2020. We felt an urgent need for a space to breathe, connect, and simply be. We needed an exhale. And so, Plant and People was born – not just as a business, but as a sanctuary, a community hub, and a testament to the healing power of nature and connection.
Our story isn't just about starting a business; it's about returning to our roots, literally and figuratively.
Seeds of Inspiration: A Lifelong Love Story
Our journey to creating this unique plant shop and café stems from a lifetime interwoven with the natural world. Amma grew up with her hands in the soil of our local community garden, learning the quiet rhythms of planting, nurturing, and harvesting. That early connection to the earth fostered a deep respect for growth and the simple power of greenery.
Complementing this is Cherron's path, steeped in over 30 years of plant-based cooking and holistic wellness. Her passion lies in understanding how the food we eat and the environment we inhabit directly impact our well-being – body, mind, and spirit. She brings a wealth of knowledge about nourishment, herbal wisdom, and creating balance from the inside out.
Together, our experiences converged on a shared vision: a space where wellness, nature, community, and nourishment could intertwine seamlessly.
Plants + Café Culture: A Natural Pairing for Restoration
Why combine a plant shop with a café? To us, it felt like the most natural thing in the world. Both plants and café culture invite a similar energy: they encourage you to pause, to slow down, to connect – with nature, with others, or simply with yourself.
Think about the feeling of walking into a lush greenhouse, the quiet calm, the air seeming cleaner. Now, picture the comforting ritual of sipping a warm herbal tea or coffee, the gentle hum of conversation, the feeling of belonging. We wanted to weave these two experiences together.
Plants themselves are inherently healing. They purify our air, bring life and beauty into our spaces, and tending to them can be a meditative act. Cafés, at their best, serve as community living rooms – places where friendships blossom, ideas are shared, and moments of quiet reflection are found. Merging the two creates an environment uniquely designed for rest, connection, and healing. Every corner of Plant and People was intentionally crafted with this in mind, using natural materials, comfortable seating, and, of course, an abundance of plant life to foster a sense of peace and restoration.

Growing, Sipping, and Healing, Together
Opening Plant and People in 2020 was our exhale, our way of creating something positive during a challenging time. But it quickly became clear that this space wasn't just for us. It was for West Philly. It was for anyone seeking a moment of peace, a connection to nature, or a nourishing cup.
It's a place to learn how to care for a plant, discover a new herbal tea, gather with friends, or simply sit quietly and recharge. It's a space rooted in the belief that nurturing plants and nurturing ourselves are deeply intertwined acts.
We invite you to come visit us at 3952 Lancaster Ave. Come find your exhale. Come grow, sip, and heal with us.
